The Gogos and Mamas Group is a registered Australian charity which provides emotional, educational and financial support to grandmothers in South Africa who care for their grandchildren who have been orphaned by AIDS and violence.

It’s estimated there are over 1.9 million children orphaned by AIDS in South Africa. This number will continue to rise unless action is taken now. The Gogos and Mamas Group are working hard to raise funds to help with many facets of daily life. The group recently raised enough money to enable 70 South African grandmothers and their AIDS and violenced orphaned grandchildren to attend a tailored workshop exploring healthy sexuality. The workshop held in South Africa is the 1st in a series of education events focussing on sexual health. Learn more about this event.

Oneness Cafe Restaurant is a relatively new to Coogee but is fast becoming well known for its amazing food, coffee and soothing vibe. It’s also kid friendly – free babycino when you buy a coffee, and it’s also not uncommon for Flora the owner to walk around with your little cherub whilst you eat your delightful meal:)

I discovered this little haven recently and upon stepping into the Oneness Cafe, I instantly felt a calming presence. The background music is soothing and even though the tables are almost full, it’s not noisy.

I’ve been back a number of times now. Try their Bacon & Egg roll (lashings of bacon yum) and Coffee Special, or spoil yourself at lunch with the Chargrilled Prawn & Squid salad with avacado. I won’t tell you about the others I’ve tried else Israel will think this motherhood thing is just sitting in cafes drinking coffee & eating fine food:)

Plant a Bay Tree. Not only are Bay Leaves excellent for cooking but they are fantastic at in your cupboards to deter moths and cockroaches.

Bay Trees can become big and difficult to maintain, so to keep maintenance (& size) down, plant it in a pot. Alternatively if you’re up to the challenge of having one in your garden, they can be a great garden hedge.
